Year 5 Maths- Spring
Maths in Year 5
Multiplication and Division
This half term we look at building our understanding of multiplication and division, developing more advanced skills in solving problems and using larger numbers. We will learn to multiply and divide up to four-digit numbers, use formal written methods for both operations, and explore how to apply these skills in real-life situations.
Fractions
After this, we dive into fractions! We will explore how to multiply fractions and understand their relationship to decimals and percentages. Through practical examples and problem-solving activities, children gain the skills to work confidently with fractions, applying them in real-life contexts and mathematical challenges.
Decimals and percentages
follwing on from this, we will learn to read, write, and order decimals to three places, and understand how to round decimals to the nearest whole number or decimal place. We will also study percentages, learning how to convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Perimeter and area
During our next unit we will explore the concepts of perimeter and area, focusing on how to calculate the size of shapes. We learn to find the perimeter of both regular and irregular polygons and develop our understanding of area, learning to calculate the area of rectangles and compound shapes.
Statistics
Our final unit is statistics, we will focus on collecting, analysing, and interpreting data through various statistical methods. We learn how to create and interpret different types of graphs and tables, such as line graphs, two-way tables and timetables.
